The introductory scene begins with melancholy music, fading in from black to an insert of an old walkman in a young boy's hands. The camera goes to a midshot of the boy, showing he is in a room alone. Effects make up is used to show the boy has a black eye. Then the frame goes to a wide shot, revealing a hospital hallway and a man (who is the boy's is grandfather, and through dialogue we find out the boy's name is Peter) walks up to the chair Peter is sitting in. He turns off his music, acting very gentle and soft. Peter avoids eye contact, looking upset but detached from whatever is happening. Grandfather leads him to a hospital room, where other family members surrounds a hospital bed. The room is in a wide shot, and the camera moves on a track past them, creating a smooth motion to reveal a bald, pale woman lying in the bed. She weakly smiles as Peter, and through dialogue we realize she is his mom. She notices the black eye, and asks him if he has been fighting. Peter's response show he has a natural sense of right and wrong, even though he is so young. He fought a few bullies who killed a frog "... when he ain't done nothing." There is then shot/reverse shot as Peter's mom talks to him, with Peter being fairly silent. There is an insert of a present, and a mid shot of the grandfather putting it in Peter's backpack. Then, as Peter's mom is dying slowly, she asks him to hold her hand. There is a close up on the hand, then a midshot of Peter turning away. The heart rate monitor sound effect flatlines, and Peter starts to show real emotion for the first time in the scene as he begins to scream and cry. There is a sequence of short takes to show the panic as his grandfather carries him kicking and screaming into the hall, telling him to wait here. Peter runs outside, breathing heavily and crying before falling to his knees at the top of the hill. There is a loud boom, a flash of light, and the frame goes to a long shot of a massive alien ship hovering over Peter. It sends a beam of light down to him, and it switches to an above angle close up of Peter in the light, screaming for his mom before the screen fades to white. The intro credits are in the scene after the introductory scene. They show the studio, the major actors, producers, editors, sound/music design, set designers, and finally: the director.
