Iron Man's intro begins with an establishing shot of a dirt road in the desert. The opening credits are minimal, and stay in this establishing shot on its bottom left third. It prevents the viewer from being pulled from the action- and is done while the scene is silent and empty. It shows Paramount as the production company and Marvel Studios. Then there is a sequence of similar shots that are wide shots of military vehicles driving on this road from different angles, with incidental rock music beginning abruptly. Then there is an insert of a radio, and the music becomes source music. There are close ups of soldiers in the military vehicle anxiously exchanging looks- then an insert of a half empty whiskey glass. The awkward silence is broken as Tony Stark is shown in frame and begins cracking one liners. The dialogue shows his snarky, self centered attitude. He speaks in quips, most of them about how great he is. The dialogue is edited in shot reverse shots, to show reactions and those speaking. The soldiers begin laughing and enjoying the ride, asking questions about Stark's extravagant life and taking a picture. As one soldier poses with Stark, they are in a two shot with the soldier grinning and giving a peace sign. As the other soldier holds the camera, he is in a mid shot taking up a third of the screen, where the windshield fills the rest of the frame. This foreshadows that something will happen outside- and after a few seconds of struggling to work the camera, the other military vehicle in front of them explodes. There is an action match of this explosion. The soldiers are no longer timid and nervous, and Stark is visibly distressed. The camera goes to a shaky handheld to show panic- and sound effects of explosions and bullets whizzing past begin. Stark leaves the envoy, and a shaky midshot is shown of him running through the action before ducking behind a large rock. There is an insert of a bomb with his company's name on that lands next to him. Then there is a wide shot of Stark hurling backwards after the bomb explodes. There is a close up of Tony from above as the screen fades to white. This intro provides insight into Tony Stark's character, and provides exposition into how he was abducted. The bomb with his name on it tell the audience that someone has stolen his technology and used it against him.
