Use of Conventions

It is common in action films, like Iron Man, for the title card to be large and impactful at the end of the introductory scene. There is also a musical sting or echoing. abrupt stop of suspenseful music to emphasize its intensity. We were trying to replicate the effect, to help underline the release of all the built up tension in the scene and the fact it was meant to be a cliff hanger. Another convention is the use of rising tension that peaks and falls. The first half our intro scene, it begins with calm pedestrians and tension builds as the robber is introduced. The tension reaches a peak when he steals the purse; and then again when the protagonist shoves him down and takes the purse. When the purse is returned, tension is released and then spikes again when the robber starts to fight her. This up and down of tension and release keeps the audience involved and interested, which is why we chose to replicate this technique. Along with this comes incidental music that slowly builds in tension until reaching its peak. In nearly every adventure, there is a "call to action", where the hero is given a quest to achieve some over arching goal. While the rest of our movie will go against a typical hero's journey, our protagonist gets a fairly archetypal call to action from the agent.
However, we skip past the protagonist's "origin story". Most super-hero related movies will give context as to how their powers were gained and their training to learn to control and improve them. However, our film begins after the protagonist has had their powers for some time and is used to working to keep them secret. While she still has some trouble reigning her powers in, she has learned how to somewhat control them already. After her call to action, our hero does not immediately become a costumed crime fighter, like many action films do. She works with the agency the agent character works with, and carries out ethically questionable secret missions. After she realizes this, her new mission becomes escaping the agency. Another  convention our film does not follow is that of a male lead, our main character is a female super hero who acts independently and her goal is not a love interest.
The social group represented in our film is mainly strong woman. We wanted our film to continue the movement to increase diversity in the film industry, and to follow the lead of the recent Wonder Woman movie. Wonder Woman focused on the character Diana's determination, strong sense of morals, and independence. This is inspired a wave of young girls to follow the super hero's and helped normalize the image of a strong woman. This effect is similar to what we wish our to achieve.

Wonder Woman emphasized Diana's strength and steadfastness, not her sex appeal or daintiness.
